What's different about generator installation in Kahului
Many Kahului homeowners now want backup power, and with rooftop solar so common, a battery system that keeps essential circuits running is often the first choice. A portable generator through an outdoor inlet and interlock is a lower-cost option. Generators must run outdoors. Permits come from the County of Maui's Department of Public Works.
Many Dream City homes are single-story houses from the 1950s and 1960s, often with original panels and wiring that predate rooftop solar, air conditioning and EV chargers. Salt air near the harbor and coast corrodes outdoor equipment.
Weather and the utility in Kahului
Kahului has warm weather year-round, with steady trade winds and salt air that corrode outdoor electrical equipment. Hurricanes and tropical storms are a seasonal risk, and in August 2023 wind-driven wildfires destroyed much of Lahaina and burned in Upcountry Maui. Hawaiian Electric serves Maui and handles meters, service drops and interconnection approvals for rooftop solar and batteries. Hawaii's rooftop solar rules have changed several times, so check current programs before planning a system.
