Panels

Signs You Need an Electrical Panel Upgrade

Updated

Short answer

You likely need a panel upgrade if you have a fuse box, a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel, 100 amps or less with plans to add an EV charger, heat pump or electric range, no open breaker spaces, or signs of heat or rust on the panel.

Equipment known to cause problems

Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco panels have long histories of breakers that may not trip. Many insurers ask about them.

Capacity for new loads

EV chargers, heat pumps, induction ranges and hot tubs each add large loads. A load calculation tells you whether you need more amps or just more space.

  • 60–100 amp service
  • Double-tapped breakers
  • Tandem breakers filling every slot

Physical warning signs

Rust, scorch marks, a warm cover or buzzing all call for an electrician soon.

When to call an electrician

If anything is warm, smells hot, sparks or keeps failing after the simple checks above, stop and call. The electrician will test the circuit, find the cause and make it safe. Related service: Electrical Panel Upgrade.

Questions

Is 100 amps enough?

It can be for a smaller home with gas appliances. Adding an EV, heat pump or electric range often needs more.
